Subject: disappointing sound problems with the bass
Subject: disappointing sound problems with the bass
there's something really strange going on with the bass for this show. every so often, usually during loud parts, the bass notes played are heard with a pronounced delay. it makes it sound like the bass is out of time.
it's hard to tell if it's a weird problem with a pedal that darcy is using, or if it's a sound engineer fucking with the bass signal in the mix. but it it comes and goes so i assume it's one of those two things.
you can hear it the most easily during the heavy parts of drown, pretty much all of i am one, the verses in silverfuck, and a few other points. it makes those parts difficult to listen to and enjoy unfortunately.
would be interesting to hear a different source if one exists to see if the problem was only in the FM feed or not.

Another excellent performance from the August/September Euro tour. Recording cuts in during the ending of Siva, and the rest of the songs here are likely out of order, as there are cuts in-between. Billy forgets the second verse to Geek USA and starts laughing. Excellent and enthusiastic gig, typical for this tour, back when they were still taking their time at gigs and playing the new songs faithful to the album versions without rushing them too much or screaming all of the vocals. Too bad this is all that circulates for this show.
Of additional note here is that this is the first show since July 30th, 1993 that the band play "Geek USA" in the album-correct tuning of Eb. When the song was performed in 1992 as "Suicide Kiss", the song was played in standard EADGBE guitar tuning. When the band debuted the song in it's new format in March of 1993, the song was now played a half-step down, in Eb tuning. This tuning was the same as the album version, and would be the tuning that the song would be played in for all of the electric July 93 shows. However, starting with the August shows (presumably Lawrence, KS 1993-08-04, of which no recording circulates), the band played the song in standard tuning. The earliest recorded example is August 7, 1993 in Pontiac. They would keep playing the song in standard tuning for the rest of the August shows in the US, including all 3 Metro shows. They would also play the song in standard tuning at the first European shows in late August, with the last recorded example being the Copenhagen gig on August 25th, 1993. The performance at the Lowlands Festival on August 27, 1993 would be the first known return to the Eb album tuning, which would be kept for all gigs after this. My first guess was that the song was briefly tried out in standard tuning to eliminate the need for additional guitars/bass to be brought on tour, tuned to Eb just for the one song. However, Billy was already using his cream-colored '74 Strat (which would be painted with "I Love My Mom" before the US tour began in October) tuned to Eb for Mayonaise. That song was played at Pontiac, and 2 of the three Metro shows in August. So, he already had a guitar tuned to Eb around anyway. Which probably means that the band were playing Geek USA in standard tuning during the August shows because they specifically wanted to play it that way. Could've been a nod to the original 1992 versions, or perhaps they had reconsidered the lower tuning featured on the album and wanted to try out doing the song in the higher key. In any case, starting with this performance at Lowlands, the song would always be performed in Eb tuning, just as it was recorded on the album.
